CORRELATES
OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Dr. Magdalena C. Cabaraban
The Women's Studies Project of the Family Health
International supports a study on the economic and social consequence
of Family Planning on women's lives.
The study determined the variations of domestic abuse
by community economic condition; identified household variables
which are significantly correlated with domestic abuse (variables
that denote the exercise of power and control); and correlated
episodes of abuse to personal traits and situational inducement
variables.
Physical abuse occurs to one in every four women in
both rural and urban places; frequency of occurrence is experienced
by nearly one-fifth of those physically abused
women. Circumstances that precede acts of physical violence include
when husband is drunk, during a quarrel or major disagreement.
High index of physical and emotional abuse happen to 21% of women
covered in the study. Domestic violence is most likely to occur when
husband is performing household works.
The findings of this study generated recommendations,
which challenge the family and the community to realistically view
and act on options in reducing abuses in the homes and in the community. |
